Chalton Street and Church Way

In the 1851 census Christian Haarnack - a music smith - lived at number 67 Chalton Street with his wife, Ann. We cannot be sure which Christian this was until we check the original entry again.

I believe that Christian Haarnack was born in Church Way in 1774. This means that he was born in the parish of St Pancras.

At this time it would have been a country lane or track running from the Tottenham Court area in a north easterly direction to Pancras Wells where the old church was situated.

The Horwoods Map of 1790 shows how Somers Town had been built and that Church Way was right on the edge of the development.

By 1827 the greenwoods map shows as a narrow street running up from the back of the new St Pancras Church to Drummond Street and Drummond Crascent.

The name is just visible at the point where it joins Chalton Street (see also below).
